Gilas Pilipinas has reinforced its frontline for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, calling up big men Cedrick Manzano, Justin Chua, Abu Tratter, and Allen Liwag as the final additions to the men’s 5x5 roster.
In the SEA Games lineup released by the Philippine Olympic Committee on Thursday, the four were named alongside Philippine Basketball Association standouts Dalph Panopio (Blackwater), Von Pessumal (Titan Ultra), and Robert Bolick (NLEX). Japan-based Jamie Malonzo also made the final cut.
They join the team’s main core of Thirdy Ravena, Matthew Wright, Ray Parks, and Veejay Pre as Gilas guns for the country’s 20th SEA Games basketball gold when hostilities begin next week in Bangkok.
The Philippines initially expected to field a stronger roster, but eligibility issues derailed several key names. Naturalized star Justin Brownlee was declared ineligible, along with Filipino-Americans Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, Mike Phillips, and Kymani Ladi. Jason Brickman, Dave Ildefonso, and Geo Chiu also begged off to commit to Abra’s title run in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
With the competition fast approaching, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and Gilas head coach scrambled to secure reinforcements willing and available on short notice.
