The Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons (now 9–2) narrowly escaped with a 137–135 overtime victory against the Washington Wizards, who entered the game with the conference’s worst record. Despite the apparent mismatch on paper, the Wizards put up a fierce fight, with six players scoring in double figures, nearly pulling off a major upset.

The Pistons led by six at halftime, but their offense went cold in the third quarter, allowing the Wizards to seize control with a 35–20 run and take a nine-point advantage heading into the final period. In the fourth, Detroit rallied behind its stars, and in the final second, Daniss Jenkins drilled a clutch three-pointer off a Cade Cunningham assist to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the extra period, both teams traded baskets down the stretch. With 17 seconds remaining, center Jalen Duren split a pair of free throws to give the Pistons a two-point lead. Wizards guard CJ McCollum had two chances to win it but missed both attempts, sealing Washington’s ninth straight loss and giving Detroit its seventh consecutive win.

Recently named Eastern Conference Player of the Week, Cunningham delivered a massive stat line with 46 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists, and 5 steals, though he shot just 14-for-45 from the field and missed several easy layups. Jenkins added 24 points and 8 rebounds, while Duren continued his strong play with 19 points and 14 rebounds.

For the Wizards, McCollum had his best game of the season, pouring in 42 points, while forward Cam Whitmore, acquired from the Rockets in the offseason, contributed 20 points off the bench. Center Alex Sarr added 15 points and 15 rebounds for another double-double performance.

Next, the Pistons will face the Chicago Bulls on November 13, while the Wizards will take on the Houston Rockets that same day.

The most pitiful guy in this game: the Wizards' basket, which has been missed so many times by Cunningham
