The San Antonio Spurs’ mighty winning streak came to an unexpected end at the hands of the lowly Phoenix Suns, 130-118, Monday morning (Manila time).
Devin Booker spearheaded the Suns’ charge with a 28-point, 13-assist double-double, while Grayson Allen and Ryan Dunn chipped in 17 points apiece to provide crucial support.
Sophomore standout Stephon Castle led the Spurs with 26 markers, but it wasn’t enough to keep their unbeaten run alive. More notably, early Most Valuable Player (MVP) frontrunner Victor Wembanyama turned in a bewildering performance, finishing with just nine points and nine rebounds.
The French phenom was held scoreless in the entire first quarter, limited to two points in the second, and blanked in the third again—a shocking showing for the Spurs’ superstar center.
Now 3-4, the Suns will look to extend their winning streak to three when they host the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Spurs, who fell to 5-1, will try to regroup when they visit Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.
