CONVERGE once again flexed its offensive might as it outgunned Phoenix ,128-1114, to take a share of the lead in the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup on Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
Alec Stockton led six FiberXers in double-digits with 22 points while Juan Gomez de Liano became the squad's main quarterback -- finding open looks for his teammates and hitting timely baskets each time the Fuel Masters tried to stage a comeback.
Thee second overall pick finished with 19 points and 12 assists - the third time he's breached double digits in assists, certainly making the most of Converge's plethora of offensive weapons from their twin towers in Justine Baltazar and Justin Arana, to his high-scoring wing tandem of the aforementioned Stockton and Schonny Winston.
The win moved Converge to 3-1, now tied with TNT and Magnolia atop the PBA standings.
"Good job to our team dahil ito yung inaasam namin yung back-to-back. Ninenyerbos kami lahat kasi baka mamaya masilat kami pero good thing naman we stayed focus even nung third quarter nung nag-run yung Phoenix," Converge head coach Dennis "Delta" Pineda said.
"At least hindi kinabahan yung mga bata. Bumawi sila, they stayed focus on our gameplan."
The FiberXers opened like a house on fire, building a 29-11 lead in the early goings of the game a lead they never relinquished no matter how hard the Fuel Masters tried.
While the Fuel Masters were able to trim the lead down to four in the third period, Converge wasn't rattled at all - responding with seven unanswered points to push the lead to a double-digit spread once more.
Come the fourth quarter, it was all Stockton and Gomez de Liano with the shifty guard from University of the Philippines repeatedly finding the former FEU star to keep Phoenix at bay.
Stockton scored 15 points of his 22 in the payoff period, while Gomez de Liano had six of his 12 assists in that stretch to make sure that there weren't any comebacks on the side of Phoenix.
Winston and Arana had 17 points apiece while Baltazar notched another double-double with 13 points, 12 boards and two blocks.
The FiberXers had contributions from almost everyone as MJ Garcia and Archie Concepcion had 11 and nine respectively off the bench.
Jason Perkins finished with 27 points while Ricci Rivero continued his fine play for the Fuel Masters by adding 23 points, six rebounds and four assists but it wasn't enough for the Fuel Masters as they dropped their second straight loss to fall to 1-3.
Kai Ballungay and Tyler Tio also had their moments with 21 and 14 respectively, but the depth of the FiberXers were simply too much to overcome.
