University of Perpetual Help System Dalta posted a masterful 72-67 win over Arellano University to stay perfect in Season 101 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Mark Gojo Cruz dazzled with 13 points and four rebounds to lead the Altas to their fourth straight win for their best start since Season 91 in 2015 when the likes of Scottie Thompson and Bright Akhuetie were still dominating.
“I’m very pleased at how my players have responded,” said Perpetual head coach Olsen Racela, who was still in the NCAA’s broadcast team when the Altas had a 4-0 start 10 years ago.
“We’re not the most talented team, but my players are making up for it through their efforts.”
Transferee Patrick Sleat chipped in 12 points, three rebounds and three steals while Josiah Alcantara added 11 markers on 2-of-2 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Sleat, who played for Racela at Far Eastern University, also provided the biggest basket when he scored a layup for a 69-65 lead that doused cold water on the uprising plotted by T-Mc Ongotan and the Chief.
JP Boral, who contributed eight points, sealed the victory by extending the lead to seven after splitting his free throws for a 72-65 count.
Ongotan delivered a game-high 20 points, five rebounds, and four steals for Arellano, which suffered its second consecutive setback.
