Twenty-three years after Mike Cortez and De La Salle University fell short against Ateneo de Manila University in the UAAP Finals, his son Jacob has delivered redemption.

Jacob played a key role in lifting the Green Archers to the UAAP Season 88 crown after overcoming University of the Philippines, a triumph the 22-year-old dedicated to his father.

“This was my promise to him, and I’m glad I was able to live up to my word,” said the younger Cortez.

The victory also allowed La Salle to avenge its Finals loss to UP last season, and for the elder Cortez, that redemption made the moment even more meaningful.

“He’s been out of my shadow for a long time, but now Jacob has truly cemented his own legacy with La Salle,” said the former Alaska Aces star.

“But I won two championships here, so he still needs one more to tie me,” Mike added with a smile.
